An intravenous pyelogram (IVP) uses X-rays to generate pictures of the organs in the urinary system. Urine (pee) is produced and eliminated by these body organs. They include you: Beneath your rib cage are two organs: two kidneys, one on each side of your spine. Urine (pee) is filtered to remove excess water and contaminants from your blood. The hollow bladder is situated in the pelvis, or the area beneath your belly. This is where the urine is held. Urine is transported from the kidneys to the bladder by tiny tubes called ureters. IVP uses contrast dye to make these organs plainly visible on X-ray images. In male patients, IVP X-rays can also show the prostate. To administer contrast, an intravenous (IV) line is utilized.
