An intravenous pyelogram (IVP) uses X-rays to provide pictures of the urinary tract organs. These are the organs of the body that create and excrete urine (pee). They are made up of two organs under your rib cage and two kidneys, one on each side of your spine. Urine (pee) is passed through your blood to remove contaminants and extra water. The hollow bladder is situated in the pelvis, which is the area under your belly. Here, urine is preserved. Urine is sent from the kidneys to the bladder by ureters, which are small tubes. IVP uses contrast dye to make these organs stand out on x-ray images. In male patients, IVP x-rays can also show the prostate.
