Audiometry Test

An audiometry evaluation measures a person's capacity to hear various sounds, pitches, or frequencies without causing any discomfort or invasiveness. Audiometry testing may be given to patients with tumors in or near the ear to check for hearing loss or to track their hearing before and after surgery. It is also used to determine whether surgery or hearing aids might help someone hear better. The outer, middle, and inner ear are the three distinct parts of our ears. Tests using audiometry can determine if you have conductive or sensorineural hearing loss (damage to the nerve or cochlea) (damage to the eardrum or the tiny ossicle bones). Several tests may be carried out during an audiometry evaluation. The softest, or least audible, sound that a person can hear is measured during a pure tone audiometry test. Wearing earphones allows you to hear a variety of sounds in one ear at a time while taking the test. Decibels are the units used to measure sound volume (dB). Loud music has a decibel range of 80 to 120, a whisper is around 20 dB, and a jet engine is around 180 dB. Frequencies are used to measure sound tone (Hz). High-pitched tones range from 10,000 Hz or higher, and low bass tones range from 50 to 60 Hz. 250–8,000 Hz at 25 dB or less falls within the normal hearing range.
