The pulmonary function test, or PFT, is a respiratory test used to diagnose chest problems by detecting lung capacity and lung wall mechanics. Pulmonary functions tests are a type of test that can help your pulmonologist determine if you have a lung disease such as asthma or COPD by measuring the functions of your lungs. It also assists your pulmonologist in determining how well your medication is working. Pulmonologists will use pulmonary function tests to help them diagnose and treat all pulmonary diseases, including but not limited to asthma, allergies, lung fibrosis, lung cancer, sarcoid, and chronic bronchitis. The Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) evaluates lung capacity, and lung and chest wall mechanics to determine whether or not a patient has lung disease. The PFT test is used to detect blockages and restrictive diseases.
