An IVP is an imaging test that examines the kidneys and ureters. The ureters are the small tubes that transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder. The radiologist will inject a contrast dye into one of your veins during the test. He or she uses X-ray images to track the movement of the contrast dye from the kidney to the ureter and then to the bladder. Dye that moves slowly or not at all could indicate a blockage in the blood flowing through a kidney. It could also indicate that the kidney, ureter, or bladder is not functioning properly. This test may be ordered if your doctor suspects you have kidney disease or a urinary tract infection. X-rays create images of your bones and internal organs using a small amount of radiation. One type of X-ray is an IVP. This test may be performed concurrently with a CT scan of the kidneys (urography). Contrast dye is also used in the CT scan. It generates images of layers or "slices" of the kidney.
