PFTs, or pulmonary function tests, assess how well the lungs work. The client can breathe normally and quietly during some of the test measurements. Other tests necessitate a forced inhalation or exhalation following a deep breath. They may be asked to inhale a different gas or medicine to see how it affects test results. Pulmonary function testing is an important diagnostic specialty, especially for diseases like COPD, asthma, and interstitial lung disease. As new and improved therapies for a wide range of pulmonary disorders become available, pulmonary function testing should play an increasingly important role in identifying and quantifying the physiologic changes caused not only by the disease but also by the treatment. This will necessitate close attention to laboratory quality assurance details, highly motivated and well-trained physicians and technologists, and a willingness to experiment with new and better ways to improve patient outcomes.
